The metal wheel at the top of Lord Jagannath temple is known as Neela Chakra (Blue Wheel). The wheel is so designed that there is a wheel within the wheel. Eight hubs join the inner and the outer wheels. The figures carved on the outer wheel are figures of eight Navagunjaras - a creature formed out of the parts of nine different animals and birds.
Folklore states, Lord Jagannath, unhappy with the growing pride of the Chakra, asked the Chakra to go and tell Lord Hanuman to come at once. Already shocked at such a minor job, Chakra was once more shocked that Hanuman treated him as an ordinary messenger. The Chakra was in for a third shock when he returned and found that Hanuman had already reached the temple faster than him.
