Ficus religiosa or Sacred Fig is a species of fig. It is also known as the Bodhi Tree, Pipal Tree, Peepal Tree or Ashwatthama Tree is considered to have a religious significance in three major religions that originated on the Indian subcontinent, Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism
It is the type of tree that Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under, and Hindu and Jain ascetics also consider the tree to be sacred and often meditate under them.
Ficus religiosa is the tree which purifies air the most. If there is no Peepal tree around the house horticulturists suggest that it would be beneficial to keep a couple of Peepal plants in pots, inside or outside the house, to rid the interiors of pollution.
