Calibrate it with a standard solution before use. It's best to calibrate. Some have ATC feature that allows them to automatically correct temp differences. Place a small amount of liquid on the prism, secure the cover plate & will evenly distribute the liquid on the prism.
Do not put the instrument into water to wash, this may lead the refractometer to be foggy or rusty inside. Clean the instrument with a soft cloth after each use, keep the refractometer dry and clean, which can make the instrument accurate and durable.
